Jagrut wishes one and all a Bright and Happy Diwali!

For Hindus, Diwali is one of the most important festivals of the year and is celebrated in families by performing traditional activities together in their homes. For Jains, Diwali marks the attainment of moksha or nirvana by Mahavira in 527 BC.

The name "Diwali" or "Divali" is a contraction of deepavali which translates into "row of lamps". Diwali involves the lighting of small clay lamps filled with oil to signify the triumph of good over evil. These lamps are kept on during the night and one's house is cleaned, both done in order to make the goddess Lakshmi feel welcome. Firecrackers are burst because it is believed that it drives away evil spirits. During Diwali, all the celebrants wear new clothes and share sweets and snacks with family members and friends.

Ban Plastic Campaign

Plastic should be banned by law and the people to carry cloth bags while shopping whether it is for grocery or other shopping. As a citizen it is your individual social responsibility to carry cloth bags and do not accept to carry plastic bags while shopping.

At Jagrut, we are of a strong opinion that the law should be strictly implemented by authorities. There should be strict punishment for violators of the law. All state pollution control boards should be strengthened. All states should ban using of plastic bags and use only biodegradable plastic products. We appeal to all shop owners and citizens that they should strictly avoid using plastic bags, if they really care of the environment and their future.

After the 26/07 deluge in Mumbai, we took the initiative to address the problems caused due to the usage of plastic bags which was one of the main reasons of the disaster. During the campaign, awareness among people was created through media and distribution of jute and paper bags. We are glad that there is a law banning plastic bags. It is proof that if we continue and believe in the cause, no effort goes to waste.
